Why you should consider using SysCP
The open-source philosophy
The SysCP project was founded, to develop a free server managment tool in terms of the
Open Source Definition and distribute it freely under the terms of the GPL. For all involved people and groups, the thought of free and non-commercial software should always be the first idea. At the same time, OpenSource is trying to involve as many people as possible in one project, thus we favor english as the main language. The following thoughts aim at a clearer view about the main ideas of SysCP in connection with their structure and administration.
- Community
The community workgroup includes the direct interfaces to the users. This workgroup is on of the kern areas of a successful development, because users form their opinions, and problems become clear. Members that are involved in this workgroup have the job to moderate the interfaces to the community and inform other workgroups about important news.
- Technics
This workgroup comprises the set-up and maintenance of all technical tools for the work at and with SysCP. This concerns especially the servers for SysCP and the keep-alive for neccessary services.
- Homepage
The term homepage comprises the public and non-public access to the SysCP project. This concerns especially the design and maintanance of the forum-software, the homepage itself, the wiki, etc. This workgroup will have to deal with the software installed and, as far as neccessary, develop interfaces of programmes to grant a smooth apperance of the project towards the public.
- Localization
A variety of languages is a big advantage of open source, but it also is a big challenge. This workgroup handles with all problems concerning languages, especially the software developed by SysCP and used in SysCP.
- Tests & Releases
This workgroup would be described best as quality assurance. They coordinate test of new and upcoming releaes and prepare the releases themselves. This includes also the building of packages, updating of the changelog, anouncements etc.
- Development
This workgroups only job is the development of the SysCP software. This also containt middle- and longterm planning, as well as the implementation of new functions for the programme.
Economic aspects
SysCP is a modern system control panel which is always under development. This continous process of improving has the affect that SysCP is always up-to-date, secure and supports the state of the art techniques of the fast changing hosting market. This advantage is very important for companies which want to be a global player on the hosting market. There are some more points which could be important for you:
- SysCP is always under development - thats your advantage to keep up your hosting business with new features for your customers. The SysCP developers have the intention to implement the newest and most common applications or standards e.g. IPv6
- You dont need to pay any licensing fees to use SysCP - but we would be very pleased if you could donate some little amount of money for the project to keep up the good work
- SysCP has its own version and qualitiy management which works quite good. Newer version of SysCP are always compatible to older versions. On upgrade all your data will be migrated automatically. So your system will stay up-to-date and secure. The only thing you need to do for that is to start the package updates by hand
- The big and active community with its developers and the companies which support and use SysCP can be seen as an guarantee for you or your company that SysCP will keep up its development and the project won't die within the next few years. So be sure that you will recieve updates and support for SysCP over the next time with an open end
- We do not provide paid or free support directly by the developers as a standard service to the product, but we provide some other possibilities to recieve support. Therefore you can use the free and active Forum or IRC-Chat. On the other hand there are some commercial companies which are specialized on professional and paid support for SysCP
Technical aspects
SysCP internaly consists of the main panel and its cronjobs. All files, the communication and management of all deamons are based on the scripting language PHP and MySQL. This is an big advantage if you compare SysCP with other System Control Panels - SysCP is easy to handle, easy to extend and distribution independent without recompiling anything! Below you can find a schema of an example setup for the connection of all components between each other. Since SysCP supports different kind of applications some components can be replaced by others.
